His approach, which oscillates between his considered use of layers and textures, reveal windows of intense, tactile hues. Cauchi’s aim is that each purposeful composition achieves a considered balance between beauty and chaos.

Using intuition and improvisation, Cauchi carefully layers materials, including acrylic, enamel, aerosol, oil and plaster. Each finished work intentionally conceals much of its underlying surfaces. Cauchi simultaneously builds a visual language that appears reminiscent of histories within urban environments and encourages the viewer to look beyond the final composition and question what may lie beneath. His works are highly collectible in their ability to integrate seamlessly within existing surroundings and designed interiors.

In a warehouse nestled in the inner western suburb of Leichhardt Sydney, behind a battered roller door you'll find Matt's studio.
The walls layered with test swatches and spray paint, with canvases of all different sizes hung across the walls, each of them at a different stage of the process. Some are wet with the first layer of texture, some with spray paint and splashes of colour - a version of the piece that will soon only have remnants of its original form peering through meticulously added layers. There's a fine haze of saw dust on the floors from sanding back each layer to reveal the final piece.

Matt welcomes clients, collectors, collaborators and galleries through the big roller door, but his favourite guest is always his Daughter, who if you're lucky - may have contributed to the base layer of your commission piece.

Whilst his focus is always on planning and painting for the next big show or exciting collaboration, he finds joy in the intimate process of creating commissions. Welcoming people of all walks of lives to come along for the ride to help bring to life their perfect piece, the one they've stared at their empty wall envisioning for years.
